The European Commission has approved a € 2 billion loan for Italy , made possible thanks to EU rules on state aid. The measure, which will remain in force until 30 June 2026, is part of the investment interventions in the communications sector envisaged by the PNRR . The aim is to ensure a wide availability of high-performance networks to provide users with qualitatively reliable services, able to meet their needs.
“This Italian regime, fully funded by the Next Generation EU Resilience and Recovery Facility, will support the deployment of high-performance 5G mobile networks : in this way consumers and businesses will be able to access high-quality 5G services, contributing to economic growth of the country and the strategic objectives of the EU relating to the digital transition ”, commented the executive vice president of the European Commission Margrethe Vestager , owner of the competition.
The measure aims to solve the problem of 5G coverage in areas of market failure and is aimed not only at promoting the reuse of existing infrastructures, but at financing the creation of efficient backhaul networks to connect the mobile base stations which, by 2026, they will still have none; in addition, the grant also covers the construction of radio stations necessary to provide an efficient 5G service, which promises a minimum download speed of 150 Megabits per second and 30 Megabits per second for uploads.
